Renew a Swedish passport in Vietnam: where to apply, collecting it in Hanoi or HCMC

Swedish citizens in Vietnam cannot apply for an ordinary passport or national ID card at the Embassy in Hanoi. The Embassy refers you to Sweden or to a nearby Swedish embassy that issues passports; the finished passport can be sent to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City for collection.

Collecting your passport in Vietnam

  • A passport or ID card can be sent to the Embassy in Hanoi or the Honorary Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City for collection, for a fee.
  • Only the holder may collect it; for a minor, the legal guardian collects.
  • Fees are paid in Vietnamese dong, by card or cash at the Embassy, cash only at the Honorary Consulate.

Never had a Swedish passport: coordination number

  • Swedish citizens who have never had a Swedish passport or ID card or been registered in Sweden, including newborns, need a coordination number (samordningsnummer) before applying for a passport.
  • The request is made in person at the Embassy in Hanoi, free of charge; the Swedish Tax Agency decides and may take up to 13 weeks. A child comes with both parents.
  • The Embassy in Hanoi may only request a coordination number when you intend to apply for an emergency passport for a trip home to Sweden.
